The History of CSR Archtops
Roger Kitchens comes from a long history of music. His father was a professional mandolin player who started playing in the 1940's. His uncle played drums professionally for many years. His brother and cousin are both drummers. His daughter plays piano and guitar. Roger grew up with instruments all around him and he has played the guitar since the late 70's. His love for music is almost matched by his love of woodworking. He began woodworking projects shortly after his marriage in 1983, and has built several pieces of furniture for clients over the years. In 1996 he decided to pursue his real dream and build his first archtop guitar, no small undertaking. When he placed his first order for instrument grade wood, the supplier encouraged him to order a lower quality of wood because in his words, the first one would be "a piece of junk". Quite the opposite, Roger still loves and plays this instrument today. In fact he showed the guitar to a local guitar icon "Boudleaux Allen" the day after he set it up, and Boudleaux played it in a restaurant that very night! Shortly thereafter he placed an order and has purchased 2 guitars. The next week he showed the guitar to his former guitar instructor "Danny Smith" who also placed an order soon after. Roger says that the first thing people seem to notice when they play his instruments is the neck. Rather than sticking to the traditional "chunky" neck you often find on an archtop, and which publications he had read encouraged, he decided to copy the neck dimentions of a modern electric solidbody that he owned and really enjoyed playing. Mixing modern feel and playability with traditional styling and hand built quality has produced an instrument that people seem to love.

" I love this bass. It is truly, in the sense of the phrase, a 'hand-crafted instrument'. It is wide and comfortable, solid as a rock. It can sound like my '66 Fender Precision (passive) and at the other end of the spectrum sound like a modern, tight active bass. It has the dynamic range that a working bass needs for today's diverse musical genres. But the real charm here: the piezo pickups. They add a wonderful sweetness to the tone. I can feel the sweat Roger put into making this bass.

Danny's Serenata is equipped with a CSR jazz pickup at the neck position, piezo transducers in the bridge, volume, tone, and blend controls. He can pan between a traditional jazz tone at the neck, rich acoustic tone at the bridge or a combination of anything in between.
" I love my guitar.
It's everything I was hoping for! It sounds great acoustically and amplified. Beautiful instrument! Thanks for building it for me! "
